Roundup, which was manufactured by Monsanto, was used on millions of properties as a weed killer. The chemical kills weeds by clocking enzymes that regulate plant growth. This weed killer unfortunately has been linked to cancer. Many individuals who developed cancer and used Roundup are now filing lawsuits against the manufacturer claiming that they got the cancer due to the carcinogens used in Roundup. The main chemical in Roundup is glyphosate. Glyphosate is so widely used in weed killer that a majority of the population has ingested it at some point during their lifetime either through water, food or dust.
What is Roundup? And what is the problem?
Roundup is extremely popular and is mostly made with what is known as glyphosate. This chemical has been used on crops for years to control weeds and worldwide more than 300 million pounds are spread each year. The problem is that the chemicals in roundup have been linked to lymphatic cancers such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. While the World Health Organization (WHO) has not come out and stated directly that Roundup contains carcinogens, they have stated that the chemical in fact is “probably” carcinogenic.
What types of cancer has Roundup caused?
The types of cancer which are associated with Roundup include B Cell or T Cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), hairy cell leukemia (HCL), Burkitt lymphoma and cutaneous T Cell lymphomas. You may be asking yourself what exactly lymphoma is? Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system. This includes your lymph nodes, thymus gland, your spleen and the bone marrow. You may experience enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss and fatigue. If you get lymphoma, you will likely undergo radiation and chemotherapy as well as potential stem-cell transplant.
What is being done against the manufacturer?
As a result, Monsanto is now facing thousands of lawsuits. These lawsuits are usually filed by farmers or laborers who used the herbicide on a regular basis and were unaware that Roundup had potential carcinogens. To date, there have been three cases which have reached a verdict, including one which was a verdict of $289 Million. To date, there are approximately 125,000 lawsuits in the United States which state that Roundup caused cancer. The manufacturer, Bayer, has a potential deal in place to cover an estimated 50-85,000 lawsuits. The payouts on these cases will range from a few thousand dollars on some to a few million dollars on others. The company is rumored to be setting aside an additional $2 Billion to cover claims which might arise from Roundup in the future as well.
